Lazio Top Serie A as Unbeaten Run Meets Struggling Napoli

Krupa Kulkarni·November 8, 2026·3 min read

Lazio travel to Napoli on Sunday 8 November as Serie A leaders, holding 29 points from 11 matches, while the hosts sit tenth with 15 points, according to the BBC's match statistics. Gennaro Gattuso manages the visitors. The fixture comes with Napoli under visible pressure from their own support.

Why it matters

The gap between the sides at kick-off is stark. Lazio have won nine and drawn two of their eleven league games, scoring 25 goals and conceding nine, for a goal difference of 16. Napoli have four wins, three draws and four defeats, with 18 scored and 14 conceded.

Lazio's form line across their last six matches reads as six straight victories. Napoli's is mixed: a draw, a win, a loss, a draw, a win and a loss. Roma sit second on 27 points, two behind the leaders, with Inter Milan third on 25 from ten games.

Tension around Napoli before kick-off

Goal.com reported that around 300 ultras gathered outside Napoli's team hotel, with a message telling anyone who did not feel ready to play that they should leave. The club's league position and recent results form the backdrop to that display.

Napoli's starting eleven, as listed in the BBC team sheets, has Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in goal behind a back three of Beukema, Rrahmani — wearing the captain's armband — and Marín. Olivera, McTominay, Gilmour and Vergara fill the midfield, with De Bruyne and Lang supporting striker Højlund.

Gilmour was booked on 65 minutes and replaced by Anguissa four minutes later. Vergara picked up a yellow card on 66 minutes, and Lang was cautioned on 44. Among the Napoli substitutes listed are Meret, Politano, Lucca and Giovane.

Lazio's shape under Gattuso

Lazio start with Mandas in goal and a back line of Floriani Mussolini, Sutalo, Provstgaard and Nuno Tavares. Frattesi, Belahyane and Taylor form the midfield, with Isaksen — the captain — Pinamonti and Noslin ahead of them.

The visitors were forced into early changes. Sutalo made way for Diogo Leite on 33 minutes, Nuno Tavares was replaced by Alfonso Pedraza at half-time, and Floriani Mussolini came off for Lazzari on 61 minutes, the same minute Pinamonti was withdrawn for Dele-Bashiru. Cancellieri, Cataldi and Dele-Bashiru were among the options named on the Lazio bench.

The Laziali reported that Gattuso spoke about his bond with Massimiliano Allegri and gave updates on Zaccagni and Tavares ahead of the match.

The wider table

Lazio's unbeaten start is the standout record in the division. Roma are also without defeat, with eight wins and three draws, and have the strongest goal difference in the league at plus 21. Inter have lost once in ten outings, and Como sit fourth on 23 points despite a loss in their most recent game.

At the other end, Udinese are bottom with five points from eleven matches, below Venezia on six and Monza on seven. The table was last updated at 12:56 on 8 November 2026, per the BBC.

The top four positions carry UEFA Champions League qualification, fifth brings Europa League football and sixth a Conference League qualifying place, with the bottom three places leading to relegation.

What to watch next is whether Lazio can protect their two-point cushion over Roma, and whether Napoli's players can answer the unrest in the stands with a result.
